Ever since the introduction of licensed broadcasting in Ireland in 1988, the glory days of Limerick radio have dimmed, with few stations making the impact that the stations of the 80s had on our lives.

Some stations have tried to keep going, most notably RLO, which has almost never been off-the-air since they lost their licence in 1997, but in general the output has never reached the heights of the nostalgic days of Raidio Luimni, Big L and Hits 954, and the RLO of today is nothing near what it had been in the past.

Still, the valiant efforts of a few to provide choice on the airwaves in Limerick has to be admired, especially considering that the naming of Limerick's first legal local station, Radio Limerick One, was a reflection that even then, back in 1989, Limerick had been earmarked for more than one station - a fact that has never materialised into anything in the intervening years.

True, an AM station was licensed for the region, but that has never seen the light of day beyond the initial application.
